1 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control]. (AMP)

I recently read Believe Bigger Discover the Path to Your Life Purpose by Marshawn Evans Daniels. In the book, she introduces the phrase God-confidence. While I don’t agree with everything in the book, it motivated me to examine why I lack confidence in certain areas of my life. That in itself made is worth the investment.

The idea of God-confidence makes me think it’s not on me to be super confident. Now, I can give that one to God. I only need to put my confidence in Him.

God has already shown me so many times that confidence in anything other than Him is foolish. On the other hand, He doesn’t want us to think lowly of ourselves either. We are daughters of the King, after all.  That isn’t to say that God expects us to doubt ourselves and our abilities to handle a given situation. No. Instead, He wants us confident in Him (Phil 4:13). As long we are in God’s will, He has already given us what we need to make it through.

Just remember that overconfidence is never a good thing.

Learning to practice confidence in Christ

We are already equipped for God’s purpose; therefore, faith is all we need. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, by faith, we receive the Holy Spirit. He takes up residence in our being. Believe it! When that happens, we must learn to rely on Him for guidance day by day and minute by minute. I say learn because relying on something or someone we can’t see isn’t natural, at least not yet. It’s an acquired practice.

How do we do this? It’s simple; through scripture and prayer. Get into your bible and spend time talking to God in prayer. It is in the power of the Holy Spirit, living inside of you, that you will begin to understand what God has for you (John 14:26). In this truth, you can be confident and out fo that begin to see the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control blossom in your life (Gal. 5:22). Is it simple? Yes. Is it easy? No, but don’t let that stop you.

Practice makes perfect.
